| Archeological signs show that two related but distinct ethnic groups, the San (“Bushmen”) and the Khoe (“Hottentots“) were the earliest inhabitants of Southern Africa. Through a slow process of migration, the Bantu (“Speakers”) came to dominate Southern Africa over a millennium with their pioneering skills and the surviving San were forced to withdraw into the most inhospitable land of the country. In the late nineteenth century, hostilities broke out between the Tswana inhabitants of Botswana and Ndebele tribes who were migrating into the territory from the Kalahari Desert. On March 31st 1885, The British Government put "Bechuanaland" under its protection. The northern territory remained under direct administration as the Bechuanaland Protectorate and is today's Botswana, while the southern territory became part of the Cape Colony and is now part of the northwest province of South Africa. In June 1964, Britain accepted proposals for a democratic self-government in Botswana. In 1965 the newly established city of Gaborone became Capital and on September 30th 1966 the first general elections lead to official independence of the Republic of Botswana. In 1967 the discovery of diamonds turned Botswana from one of the poorest nations of Africa into one with the highest economic growth rate for over thirty years. Ruled by the Botswana Democratic Party, Botswana continues to enjoy stable economic growth today and a rising income per capita. At present, Botswana produces over 17 millions carats every year making it the largest diamond producer worldwide. Botswana’s prospects for future growth are truly a stuff of fairy tales: a deserved happy ending for a peace loving Nation. |
